Hawaii is, and has always been, very politically liberal. It was helped even more by the fact that native son, Barack Obama, on the ticket. In the 2008 election it went to Obama by an astounding 45 percentage points. The closest county in the whole state was Honolulu County which Obama won by 41 percentage points.
Hawaii has always been very Democratic though. In its entire history in voting in presidential elections, it has only chosen the Republican candidate twice. In both cases the Democrat only won one state and the District of Columbia.
Republicans would have to do something extrodinary to put this state in play for them in any election cycle, in the next few decades. It is as solidly Democratic as ever.
